Putting together your own skateboard kit and looking for truckie pads? You have come to the right place! At Selectshop you will find a wide range of accessories to assemble the perfect board for your needs! Pads are a small and inconspicuous, but important element that will help you get the most out of your board. Their main purpose is to increase wheel clearance to prevent contact with the tabletop, or so-called wheel bites - this 'wheel bite' can cause vibrations, loss of control of the board and, as a result, a fall. Find out more about the functionality of the pads and choose the best one for your needs!

Troll pads - standard sizes

Trucks pads come in three popular sizes: 1/8" (3.175 mm), 1/4" (6.35 mm) and 1/2" (12.7 mm) - choose the right one depending on how much space you need and what type of board you have.

Skateboard pads - types

There are several types of pads, each offering different functionalities. Learn about the typical types of pads:

- standard truc shims,

- wedge and angle (conical/cylinder): they come individually as conical and cylinder, or as a mix of the two, i.e. the shim is cylindrical on one side and conical on the other. They offer both good manoeuvring flexibility and solid support and ride stability,

- Shock pads: they help to reduce vibrations and impacts, but also prevent the top from cracking due to pressure near the truck mounts.

Shock pads under truckies - what do you need them for?

Shims aren't always necessary, but they will come in handy if you don't have enough space between your skateboard top and the wheels. Without a sharp turn, the wheels lock against the tabletop, causing the board to stall and a wheel bite to occur, followed by a usually unpleasant fall.

A sign that you need shims may be that you have chosen fairly large wheels (e.g. around 60mm in diameter). With large wheels, any contact between the wheels and the tabletop can end in a capsize. With shims, you are assured that the wheels will not bite the tabletop when landing tricks or making an expressive turn. In addition to wheel size, it's worth considering factors such as the hardness of the rubber bands on the truckies, the tightening power of the truck and your weight (whether you're bending the board hard to the ground with your weight). If you are still unsure, you can always try adding shims and if they don't work, remove them.

How do I choose the correct shims for my skateboard?

Use the following criteria when selecting your truckie pads:

- thickness: no surprise here, thicker pads provide more distance between the wheels and the board, which helps to avoid wheel bite and increases stability. Thinner pads allow for more dynamic turns and manoeuvring,

- the type of board you ride: the type of board you ride can influence your choice of pads. For example, cruiser or longboard skateboards tend to have larger wheels and may require thicker pads,

- your riding style: if you prefer a flat and fast ride, you may want to choose firmer pads for stability. If you like more technical tricks and manoeuvres, softer pads can help make the board more responsive.
